No More War Festival in Suderbyn Ecovillage

Description: Suderbyn is a young international ecovillage on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea in Sweden. Since 2008, residents and volunteers have been building a low-impact permaculture ecovillage with their own resources, relying mainly on volunteerism. Visit the website www.suderbyn.se for more info. No More War is an international festival with the aim to strengthen the sense of intercultural friendship in the times of increasing socio-political tension, media fights and physical rearmament in the Baltic Sea Region. Official festival website: http://www.no-more-war.confetti.events/. Ahimsa (Sanskrit for concept of non-violence) is the overarching theme of the camp, likely to continue in the future as a series of yearly workcamps organized around different aspects of non-violence.
Type of Work: The main work consists in the preparation of the No More War festival (17-20 August 2017) and the volunteers' active participation and contribution to the festival. The preparation work involves physical activities, mainly around setting up an ecological and permaculture design festival infrastructure (e.g. setting up tents, showers, chill out spaces, kitchen, scene, decoration of the space). It also involves some organization, guided by a work leader on site and acting as hosts to festival guests. The volunteers are expected to contribute actively to the festival by planning and carrying out a campaign, making some art etc. during the festival period, in line with themes related to peace, no more war, non-violence, international solidarity etc.
Study Theme: Two workshops will be held touching concepts like non-violence, human rights, peace, deep democracy, international solidarity etc. The volunteers' contribution to the festival itself by preparing an action to carry out during the festival also belongs to the study and reflection part.
Accommodation: Simple conditions, sleeping in tents that the volunteers are required to bring themselves (a couple of tents can be borrowed from the host in case of need). There are two showers and 3 dry compost toilets (two outside, one inside). Please note that there will be vegetarian and vegan food ONLY. Food will be cooked by the volunteers, assisted by one community member for each meal.
Language: English, Swedish
Requirements: The volunteers' strong motivation and interest in the matters of peace, international solidarity and non-violence is a requirement. Please keep in mind that there will only be vegetarian / vegan food and there will be no possibility to request any meat products during your stay in the ecovillage. Eating vegetarian and vegan is part of Suderbyn's value system and we ask you to please respect this.
