Dance and theatre with kids (Reconvilier BE)
Description: SCI organizes a dance and theatre week for kids from the asylum seeker center in Reconvilier together with children living in the village. The aim of this integrative project is to give the possibility to kids from refugee centers to have a rich exchange of experiences with local kids and to improve their local language skills in a creative context. This will be accomplished with a mix of dance and theatre playing activities. At the end of the second week, there will be a presentation of the work. About 25 to 30 kids between 6 and 13 years old will participate in the project. The local organizer is an experienced SCI volunteer that participated in similar projects before in Lausanne & Neuchâtel. The dance pedagogues (Noemi & Leila) are professionals who have experience with kids.
Type of Work: In the preparation week (the first week of the workcamp), you will receive an introduction to migration issues, dance activities as well as theatre playing and animation with children. You will prepare the activities for the second week together with the pedagogues. During the project week, you will organize and lead games and dance and theater activities for kids with the help of the pedagogues. You may also accompany the kids from the refugee centers to the village. At lunch time you will help looking after them.
Study Theme: During the first week, you will have introductions and discussions of theater pedagogy and integrative games as well as on relevant issues such as migration and asylum in Switzerland and on peace work. This theoretical knowledge will be helpful for the concrete work with the children in the second week.
Accommodation: You will have simple accommodation with beds in the village. Please, bring your sleeping bag. Have in mind that two or more volunteers may be accommodated in one bedroom and there may be just one bathroom/toilet for the whole group. The cooking of daily meals you will organize yourselves together in the volunteer group, either with products or budget for shopping, provided by the project.
Language: French will be spoken with the kids (level B1/B2 is required). English can be used among the volunteers. If French isn't your mother tongue, we would invite you to a Skype-Interview to check your language skills (please send your Skype ID with the application). Volunteers whose French is not sufficient won't be accepted. Local language is French even if Swiss-German is spoken in the villages nearb
Requirements: As part of your application, please send us a motivation letter in FRENCH.
You should have interest in migration and intercultural issues, taking responsibility when working with kids, be creative and participate in daily life. (Be prepared that the work with the kids in the second week is really rewarding, but also requires longer hours and can be quite exhausting.)
Notes: This workcamp is part of the international campaign "Building Bridges" which aims to raise awareness and stimulate the reflection about the current refugee crisis and forced migration in general. Through non-formal learning methods, participants will be able to share knowledge and experiences about the situation of refugees and asylum seekers in different countries as well as volunteering projects that locally support refugees and asylum seekers. Volunteers will be encouraged to think about how they can make a contribution to peaceful living together of people from all origins in their home town.
