Wikipedia for Peace 2016: Environmental Justice
Climate for Peace Programme:
Description: The online encyclopedia Wikipedia was started in 2001 and is today one of the most popular websites worldwide, being used by internet users all over the world for its open content created by volunteer writers. Over 38 million articles in over 250 languages exist already. This workcamp is the second cooperation between Wikimedia Austria, a local chapter of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, and SCI Austria. During this camp, we will get to know Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, will learn about issues surrounding peace and will support the aim to make knowledge available and free for everybody on the internet. This year, we focus on writing articles on people fighting for environmental justice.
Type of Work: Doing research for Wikipedia articles, writing/translating new articles and improving existing articles in your native language. This year we will mainly write and improve biographies of people who won one of two important awards for sustainability and environmental justice: 1. the Goldman Environmental Prize and 2. the Right Livelihood Award. Other tasks could be: Taking pictures for Wikimedia Commons on cultural and natural monuments close to where we are. Writing dictionary entries for Wiktionary. Sharing your new knowledge with the Austrian Wikipedia community and maybe also giving workshops on your new knowledge and skills to locals.
Study Theme: There will be a big emphasis on studying in this workcamp. We will learn how to write good Wikipedia articles and take pictures for Wikimedia projects. We will learn about the principles behind Wikimedia projects as well as free licences/open content philosophy in general. We will learn about environmental justice - through your own research, through exchange with other participants and through external inputs. We will also have a workshop on a current topic related to peace.
Accommodation: We will intentionally live a simple and sustainable lifestyle during the workcamp. We will sleep in shared rooms in an easy sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag. We will receive simple vegetarian food supplies and will be in charge of our own cooking and cleaning.
Language: We will speak English in the group. You can write Wikipedia articles in any language you want, we encourage you to write in your native language.
Requirements: Interest in environmental and peace issues and web culture. You should like writing and that you like to do research on your own. No previous knowledge of Wikipedia necessary. Since this workcamp is supposed to be as environmentally-friendly as possible, please do not take a plane to arrive, but a train or bus instead.
Approximate Location: This year the camp will take place in Jenbach, a small town in the region Tyrol in the West of Austria.
