Co-Creative Craftivism Camp
Description: This year KVT celebrates its 70-years-old history of peacework, and will therefore host a peace-themed jubilee camp at Rauhanasema (Peace Station) in Helsinki. Come and make textile art together with local volunteers and refugees!
The camp will be hosted by KVT Finland, the Finnish SCI branch, in collaboration with the Peace Union of Finland, and the local social design collective Concreatives. The group of volunteers in the camp will consist of both international volunteers and asylum seekers from receptions centres of Helsinki area.
Rauhanasema (Peace Station) is a centre that hosts several Finnish peace organizations, including KVT Finland, located at the outskirts of the city centre of Helsinki.
Type of Work: Manual work, handicrafts and organisation of social activities. During the camp, the volunteers will produce a peace-themed knitted graffiti in the area of Rauhanasema. The artwork will be designed and the work instructed by the Concreatives Collective. The volunteers will also conduct some basic renovation work at Rauhanasema, such as re-painting tables and chairs. In addition, the volunteers will organize a handicraft workshop for the local residents of Eastern Pasila.
During their free time, the volunteers will get a chance to explore the city and the attractions of Helsinki. We will visit a Finnish sauna, learn about the history of textiles and enjoy the summer in the city parks and by the sea. The summer weather in Finland can vary from +30 and sun to +10 and rain, so be prepared!
Study Theme: Handicrafts, peace education, urban activism. The Volunteers will receive instruction on basic handicraft techniques from the representatives of the Concreatives Collective, and also learn about making change in urban environments through art and handicrafts. KVT volunteers will organize a peace-themed workshop for the camp participants.
Accommodation: Shared accommodation on mattresses on the floor. As Rauhanasema is located right next to the Pasila railway station that is currently under construction, the area can be quite noisy at times. The volunteers will also be sharing the space of Rauhanasema with the other organizations working there.
Requirements: Interest in working in a multicultural group in an urban environment. Interest in handicrafts is an advantage.
Approximate Location: Pasila, Helsinki
Notes: The objective of the camp is to bring together volunteers from different backgrounds and to promote solidarity and cultural understanding through shared manual work. The camp aims at providing the participants with concrete ideas on how to make a difference in their own local environments.
This workcamp is part of the international campaign "Building Bridges", which aims to raise awareness and stimulate reflection about the current refugee crisis and forced migration. Through non-formal learning methods, the participants will be able to share knowledge and experiences about the situation of refugees and asylum seekers in different countries. The volunteers will be encouraged to think about how they can contribute to people from all origins living peacefully in their hometown.
