Creative Activities with Young Asylum Seekers
Description: The reception center of Siuntio offers accommodation for about 20 minor asylum seekers (16-17 years old), who come to Finland without their families. The center is operating in a big brick house in an idyllic countryside located approximately 40 kilometers west from Helsinki. Since the location is quite remote, the center wants to welcome international volunteers to make the summer holidays more enjoyable for the minors, share their culture and new ideas.
Type of Work: Spending time with the teenagers at the reception center and organizing activities with them such as games, excursions, sports and arts. Some of the activities last year were opening a pancake cafe for a day, constructing kites and having kite competition at the end. The volunteers can also help in the garden and with painting. PLEASE NOTE: It is very important to keep in mind that the camp is not for making interviews or collecting information about the experiences of the residents. The aim is to have a good time and organize activities together.
Study Theme: About minor asylum seekers and local culture of Siuntio.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be staying in an idyllic but simple farm house next to the center, sleeping on mattresses on a floor. Food will be provided by the canteen in the reception center.
Requirements: Previous experience about organizing activities for teenagers could be helpful but is not obligatory.
Approximate Location: Siuntio, Southern Finland
Notes: This workcamp is part of the international campaign "Building Bridges" (www.sci.ngo/sci-campaigns/building-bridges) which aims to raise awareness and stimulate the reflection about the current refugee crisis and forced migration in general. Through non-formal learning methods, participants will be able to share knowledge and experiences about the situation of refugees and asylum seekers in different countries as well as volunteering projects that locally support refugees and asylum seekers. Volunteers will be encouraged to think about how they can make a contribution to peaceful living together of people from all origins in their hometown.
