From EGO to ECO
Description: Achalam is an EcoAshram that offers people space to reflect in contemplation of their inner nature as they return to their grass roots of living in nature. The ashram was established in 2008 in the temple town of Tiruvannamalai better known for the sacred mountain Arunachala, that has drawn souls for centuries with its power to awaken people to their innate inner peace.
Today there are three housing structures made of mud, stone and ironalong with a communal bathroom, offering simple accommodation to visiting pilgrims. A mindfulness facilitator offers meditation and self awareness programmes to enhance the inner journey of self discovery as volunteers will experience what it’s like to live in a natural eco environment and transcend the ego identity.
Type of Work: The work camp is focused on engaging in local community work and we will facilitate fun learning activities at the ashram for the local village children. The volunteers will engage in simple duties within the ashram,which include watering plants, growing vegetables, and participating in meal preparation. Every morning we will have meditation and yoga sessions as well as learning and reflective activities on different days. Field visits will include visiting the caves on the sacred mountain Arunachala, going to the Ramana Maharshi ashram, visiting the Arunachaleshwara temple and doing the auspicious circumnavigation of the mountain.
Study Theme: Self awareness, meditation, mindfulness, living consciously, living yoga, sustainability, ecological awareness, cultural appreciation, rural farming, rural lifestyles, building sustainable structures, engaging with the locals, teaching English, playing, having fun.
Accommodation: Mosquito nets, pillow case and sleeping bag needed Three accommodation houses with separated space for male and female will be provided during the workcamp. No beds available but pillows and mats are provided. Sleeping is on the floor. Pls. bring your own sleeping bag or light bedding, pillowcase, and mosquito net. Accommodation will be on location at the ashram.
Requirements: Motivation to work inclusively in a team/group while respecting other members of the community. Interest in learning about different cultures. Tolerance, understand and a good sense of humour. Interest in ecological and sustainable living, designing eco structures and building with natural materials. Interest in meditation and how to live mindfully and peacefully.
Approximate Location: Achalam Ecoashram, Vediyappanur Village Road, Vediyappanur Village, , Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, South India. The ashram is located in a poor rural agricultural area surrounded by local villages, special needs centre, orphanages and schools.
Notes: Conditions of Participation: 1. You are expected to be an active member of the group and contribute to work, housekeeping and fee time activities. 2. You are expected to work 5 to 6 hours per day five days a week on a voluntary basis. 3. Your independence will be respected during the camp but the camp leader has the ultimate responsibility for your safety during the workcamp and they have to sort out the problems if you get lost or injured. If you want to do an activity independently of the group you must discuss it with the camp leaders and they must be fully aware of your plans. 4.
