SEEDS of PEACE, Buru Island II
Description: The archiple of Maluku is a 'laboratory of peace' after its long tragic conflict among Christians and Muslims, which happened in 1999-2002. This project brings youth from both sides together by way of a common activity: school gardening and planting of trees. Planting is a good and ‘safe’ vehicle to work together. Plants/trees are moreover symbols of hope, growth and diversity. At the end it is also a positive action against global warming and environmental problem, which is also an issue in Maluku. The project will be located in Buru Island.
Type of Work: Together with kids/youth from local community, volunteers will plant trees and do gardening, run creative peace and environmental education sessions at schools by any kind of materials (such as puppets, reading books, cartoon presentation, etc), and at the end of project they are expected to create a mini 'intercultural' garden and/or stage-performance for a school at local community
Study Theme: Conflict and mutual respect (peace-education), environmental education
Accommodation: venue provided
Requirements: Volunteers who likes gardening, working with kids and have creative ideas. Any idea for a creative teaching and garden concept is really welcome.
Approximate Location: Buru Island of Maluku in East Indonesia has been known as a beautiful spice island, since colonial time.
