Teaching English & Mathematics to Pupils at Primary School
Description: Volunteers and community members will give support and guide learners academically in teaching English and Mathematics. They will also ensure learners are adequately fed during the programme and establish the academic needs of the students and more appropriate interventions (Social, economic, community, family, religious etc.)
Type of Work: This is an exciting project as volunteers have opportunity to work with different communities and interact with children after school and have also the opportunity to be hosted by individual family members for their period of stay in the country.
The camp will require volunteers to be involved in different activities such as building up learning activities which will be used when the volunteers will meet the children from 2pm to 4pm daily activities. Volunteers will work in groups and will travel from 4 different Primary Schools and interact and teach children after school. Trained teachers will be available for assistance on the activities at the schools.
Study Theme: The work camp will require volunteers to be involved in English and Mathematics activities and as well cultural activities and creating and using objects which will be used when the volunteers will meet the children from 2pm to 4pm daily activities.
Accommodation: Accommodation will be in a house and venue still to be confirmed both in Mabopane. Participants will be required to bring their own sleeping bags. The accommodation has a simple bathroom with shower and there is running water. The accommodation and work place have flushing toilets and do have electricity but should expect normal power cuts lasting to 4 hours on various time slots in the week.
Language: The community has multi-cultural people and English is mostly spoken with local languages such as Sotho, Zulu, and Tshwana to name a few.
Requirements: Open minded, ready to interact with other people of different cultural background - Positive attitude - Willing to share his/her experiences - Flexible to live/stay in simple living conditions - Flexible to eat local food - Ready to do academic work on the project and No experience needed at all. Willingness to guide students especially in cultural and arts activities mostly afternoon work.
Approximate Location: Mabopane/Garankuwa, Pretoria. Participants can book tickets to O.R. Tambo International Airport. Take the Gautrain to Pretoria and one of our volunteers will be waiting for you at the Gautrain station. www.gautrain.co.za
Notes: The work camp participation fee is strictly Euro 200 and this covers simple accommodation, food and project expenses during the camp. Please note that this does not include travel expenses to and from the camp, so participants are asked to reserve a small amount of money for transport to the camp and vice-verse. We advise all volunteers to ask for advice from us when they are planning to book their ticket to Pretoria.
