Building a Community on a Fishermen's Village!
Description: Volunteers will have the opportunity to work on Cova do Vapor, a fishermen's village very close to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Although you will find it extremely charming, for the people who live here, this is an isolated place that lacks public transportation, basic infrastructure and cultural/community events. International volunteers will work together with residents and also local volunteers to build a community space to be used by everyone in the future. In the meantime, this workcamp will be a great intercultural moment for everyone and hopefully will bring a long-lasting change in Cova do Vapor!
Type of Work: Volunteers' activities will be both manual and social. You will help build the social community space, so there will be a lot of carpentry and installation of the surrounding green space. Volunteers will always be supported by architects and construction specialists.
You will also help organize social and educational activities with the local children and youth. We would like you to, for example, organize a sports competition between the local community and international volunteers!
Study Theme: With this workcamp, you will learn how intercultural contact can make a difference on an isolated community such as Cova do Vapor. Also, we will focus on how building a community center all together can promote social inclusion, development and this community's cultural perception.
Accommodation: You will sleep on a big and beautiful house a few steps from the building spot - check some photos here http://tinyurl.com/z2km7xz. There are three bathrooms with shower and you will have 4 available bedrooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag!
Volunteers will cook all together, divided in groups.
Language: The camp language will be English, but speaking Portuguese (or at least Spanish) is a plus so you can communicate with community members who do not speak English.
Requirements: There are no special requirements, but of course it will be a big plus if you have construction knowledge/experience. This workcamp requires a specific motivation letter and Skype talk!
Approximate Location: This workcamp will be held in Almada county, in a fishermen's village called Cova do Vapor.
Notes: You will have the opportunity to use the local residents' room for some games and also explore the beach area around - hopefully with sunny weather!
