Description: „Czerwony Dworek 8” (Red Mansion No. 8) is partly ruined, 270 – years old, village house where h/2 Foundation runs multidisciplinary centre of leisure and creativity. There are a lot of activities organized in the house, like: artists residences, seminars, performances and workshops including autumn festival of contemporary art inspired by the work of John Cage. “Czerwony Dworek 8” is located in the picturesque area of Karkonosze Mountains, surrounded by nature and unique architecture of the nearby Valley of Palaces and Gardens.
Type of Work: You will help to renovate the stairwell and workshop room, there will be a lot of carpentry, cleaning and installation. The other task will be garden maintenance. We will be working 5-6 hours per day, 5 days per week. Volunteers’ activities will be mostly phisical, so be prepared for a hard work.
Study Theme: Based on the audiovisual collection of the WRO Art Center / Media Art Biennale WRO, the participants will be given an introduction to the contemporary Polish media art. Screenings of short programs with video works and documentations of performances and installations focused on certain themes, as well as documentations of the previous editions of the Media Art Biennale WRO will give participants an insight in various strategies and positions within this field of contemporary creativity with focus on Polish artists.
Accommodation: The house offers comfortable sleeping places in a few apartments. Kitchen with stove, outdoor cooking space and two bathrooms with running and warm water will be available for participants.
Requirements: There are no special requirements, but of course it will be a big plus if you have construction knowledge/experience. The volunteers are expected to be able to do physical work and to learn new skills.
Approximate Location: In the mountains! :-) „Czerwony Dworek 8” is located in a small village Mysłakowice, 10 km from Jelenia Góra which will be our meeting point on the arrival day. It’s situated in the south-west part of Poland, very nearby Germany and Czech Republic.
Notes: The house, which is the very last building in the village is nearby the woods with access to many footpaths and bike routes. The most beautiful view of majestic Śnieżka Mountain – the highest peak of Karkonosze, is visible from the windows of the house (http://czerwonydworek8.pl/). All food will be prepared by volunteers with a little support of art-culinary team “Food Think Tank” (www.foodhinktank.pl). Volunteers will be asked to use as little water as possible since it comes from the well and can be easily exhausted by extensive use. The house is fully equipped with electricity, has a washing machine and Internet connection. We have a library, board games, garden space, barbecue and a tool workshop. You need to bring a sleeping bag and a pillow (if needed).
