Boombal Folk Festival
Description: Boombalfestival is well known for the pleasant atmosphere which prevails both on the dancing floor and at the bar. Everyone dances with everyone else, everyone talks to everyone else. In other words: a real social event! Boombal has now been around for 11 years in Belgium and is enjoying growing success. Every month, there are Boombals in various major cities in Belgium and a real festival is planned. The Boombalfestival aims to promote, support and spread traditional European folk music and dances. Simultaneously new workshops will teach interested people various new skills. It is a 4-days folk music and dance festival (24/08-27/08/2017) for young and old. Make it happen by participating.
Type of Work: We will build up and break down the festival (tents, dancing floors, fences, decoration, accommodation …) together with a group of Belgian volunteers. The tents will already be in place before the arrival of the volunteers. So we’ll concentrate on the ‘smaller’ jobs like setting up fences, decoration, signalisation, placing garbage-bins etc... After the festival everything needs to be broken down again including the tents. We have a strict deadline because the festival site has to be cleared out on time too. So we prefer to inform you that we make working days of 8 hours during the building up and breaking down period. The work is quit physical and can be quit hard, but also very rewarding. Free time during the festival to enjoy your hard work and after the breaking down days
Study Theme: During the workcamp there’ll be an insider’s event for volunteers with dancers and musicians. So in the evening we can dance/play music with them. The workshops will be given by an experienced dancing-teacher and there will be live-musicians. There is the possibility to participate in dance- & folk music workshops during the festival.
Accommodation: During the build-up and break-down period of the camp volunteers will sleep in an old basic (unheated) house. During the festival everybody will stay in a big tent with a wooden floor. Camping-beds are provided, sleeping bags should be brought. During the build-up and the festival, food is provided. Afterwards that there's a kitchen for self-cook. Sanitary facilities are in a 'showering-container.
Language: The local language is Dutch, though with the international volunteers the English will be used
Requirements: A festival requires a lot of work and preparation, but also a lot of work after the festival to clean up everything. We want enthusiastic people who want to co-operate with the Boombal team to organise a successful festival. Volunteers are supposed to bring a sleeping bag, working clothes and shoes and boots for rainy days.
Approximate Location: The festival is situated in the beautiful Lovendegem, rural village located between Ghent & Bruges. The setting is a big green field, surrounded by huge poplars and old willows.
