Gipsy Fun Fair Gitannekesfoor
Description: Gitannekesfoor is a charming small-scale family festival that offers a platform for starting artists and performers (circus, music, clowns, puppetry,..). The festival is run entirely by volunteers, there are no sponsors and no publicity, all products are as local and sustainable as possible. 2017 will be the 10th edition and the fourth one with an international camp. The festival is free for children and last year we had 5700 visitors over three days.
Since last year we are cooperating closely with asylum-seekers who are also volunteering at the Gitannekesfoor.
Type of Work: You will be deployed in small teams working with the local volunteers. There are at least 37 different tasks to prepare the festival, like building the main stage, a favela village for the artists, the volunteers lounge and lots of special constructions. Decoration: It consists of painting lots of things, dressing up trees and fences with plants, designing a bar, pimping the trash cans and much more. All this can be injected with creative ideas of the volunteers. Cooking food for hungry volunteers. Briefly, there are lots of tasks every day on which will be decided up to with the coordinator. After the festival weekend, there are only 2 days left to help tear everything down. Then the work camp group will have to leave for the remaining 3 days and have free time to travel with the group.
Study Theme: The study theme will consist of a guided tour in the historical part of Ghent. The second part of the study-theme will be a day of work in the nature organised during which voluntary work, nature-conservation and nature-perception will be linked.
Accommodation: The volunteer will be hosted in a luxury “army”-tent with real beds, furniture and a wooden floor. There are eco-toilets, a shower-container, a laundry-place and a favela-style kitchen. Access to internet will be limited
Requirements: The volunteers take part in the entire festival, the building and the breaking down afterwards. The volunteers do the same tasks as the team itself. The volunteers are supposed to show interest in the above mentioned study-themes and be open-minded. Further you don’t need anything special, just some working clothes and good shoes, basic biking skills but above all a lot of enthusiasm!
