Eco-Center Oasis (Mons)
Description: “L'Oasis” is a young environmental association whose aim is to develop an eco-citizen educational center for training, learning and research in applied ecology. The will of the center is to show that ecological alternatives do exist in every area of our daily lifes and to promote knowledge and skills for a simple and healthy way of life, neither harmful for us nor for the environment.The main topics are about nutrition, permaculture, food, organic gardening, culture of organic local and ancient fruit-trees, urban agriculture, recycling of old objects, ecological renovation of the building, water management, energy, ...To achieve this, they organize different types of trainings and workshops...
Type of Work: One of the themes of the project will be the eco-renovation. Participants will be involved in the ecological renovation of the building, focusing on recycling as much as possible, to show that renovating a building, in an environmentally friendly manner, without spending huge amounts of money in technology, is possible. Volunteers will do different activities: exterior tiles and oven tiles (local ceramic, natural ecological material), clay plaster (cellar), various interventions in the garden, external facilities in front of the greenhouse, landscaping of the garden in front of the pergola, various small renovation and layout works, rocket stove mass heater, depending on the time available.
Study Theme: Environment, eco-renovation…. The philosophy of Oasis is based on both a global approach and local reflection. It can be found in the slogan "think globally to act locally". It is not limited to the transmission of techniques, but seeks to articulate coherently reflection and action. Volunteers will receive information about the activities organized by the Center: organic gardening, making of natural cleaning products and natural soap, production of bread in their handmade oven, building of a dry toilet, basket weaving, clay plaster...
Accommodation: Basic accommodation in a dormitory of the center (take your own mattress, pillow and sleeping bag).
Requirements: For volunteers who like manual work.
Approximate Location: Ghlin is part of the biggest city of Mons and Mons is a city that is 70 km away from Brussels, in the south of Belgium. In 2015, Mons was the European Capital of the Culture. For more information on the activities and the tourism in Mons: http://www.visitmons.be/
