More than one apple a day... (Bechstedt)
Description: KulturNaturHof Bechstedt is situated in the Nature Park Thüringer Wald, beeing of high cultural and landscape attractiveness. The village of Bechstedt (165 inhabitants) is characterized by an innovative and visitor friendly community. Our "Cultural Stable" organises concerts and other events. Two hotels and restaurants, a modern bowling alley, a train station, many hiking trails and a small cidery that treates apples from regional orchards complete the infrastructure. The latest project is a modern biomass heating for the whole village that was built in 2012 by the local energy co-operative. Bechstedt is situated one hour away from Erfurt, Weimar and Jena. It is relatively well connected by train, thus enabling the volunteers to move without private car.
Type of Work: The farm activities comprise in landscaping, gardening, orcharding, fruit processing and constructional work. The volunteers will assist in the daily work of the farm, e.g. taking care of the organic garden, working in the orchards, planting and maintaining the trees, harvesting the fruits. A special task will be to assist in the production of apple juice in the new cidery (people from the region bring their fruits and get their own apple juice) and other apple products.
Study Theme: Conservation and ecology, orcharding, encountering limited availability of energy, fuels and drinking water.
Accommodation: In a traditional farm house turned into a holiday apartment in the middle of the village. You will cook together with the group; food will be supplied.
Requirements: Willingness to do manual work, interest in the theme, improvisational talent, humour and good spirit.
