Agroecology in "Froidmont" Farm
Description: The Social Farm “Froidmont” is a nonprofit organization working on social economy and socio-professional inclusion. Since its creation in 2010, it faces 3 challenges: the lack of jobs, social exclusion and separation as well as destruction of our natural environment. The organization trains and accompanies people in a precarious situation to find a job and works for social inclusion and protection of the environment. Its pedagogy is based on companionship and training through work. Thanks to its training courses, the people in need can become apprentice cooks / waiters or gardeners in organic farming. In addition to acquiring new skills, they are accompanied in their job search or in the launch of future professional projects. These trainings allow them to find a place in the society.
Type of Work: Mainly organic gardening. Volunteers will participate to various tasks related to agroecology. They will work in a team with the trainees of the farm. Activities will be diverse: soil and plant work, ergonomic and maintenance of tools, composting, mulching, green manure, sowing, transplanting, planting, fruit, red fruit, ponds, forestry, rotations and associations, plan of culture, fence, irrigation, greenhouses. Volunteers will also learn permaculture- organic methods and how to transform vegetable products (in the kitchen). Volunteers will also see the pedagogic restaurant "La Table de Froidmont" where the vegetables are transformed in dishes cooked by the trainees. They propose a French cuisine, everything is fresh, homemade and fair.
Study Theme: Learning by practicing the profession of organic gardener in permaculture. The vegetable gardens are also open to citizens and even shared: plots of land are dedicated to those who wish to cultivate their own vegetables. They also organize training in organic gardening and permaculture on small areas and on different themes. Beyond that, the farm also rents out transitional housing units with moderate rents and is at the initiative of the preparation of a complementary currency for the Walloon Brabant.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in rooms of the farm (room of two). Mattresses and bedsheet will be available for the volunteers.
Requirements: Have an interest in gardening activities and enjoy manual labor.
Approximate Location: Rixensart is a charming little town located approximately 20 km from Brussels.
Notes: Volunteers will eat everyday with the team and the trainees in the pedagogical restaurant "La table de Froidmont". To work in team with the trainees, the farm proposes to work with the same working hours (8:30 am-16:30 pm). A discussion will be organized with the group to see if it's ok or if the group needs to take extra free time to compensate. Not accessible to wheelchairs.
