Entertainment workcamp for mentally disabled children
Description: The project, which takes place in Kpalime in the Centre on mentally disabled children, aims to foster the development and growth of the child living with a mental disability through informative and fun activities. In Togo, there are ten Médico-Psycho-Pedagogical Institute "The centers" spread throughout the territory including the Kpalime. The first institutes have emerged in the eighties due to the awareness of the daily drama of the families of children with mental disabilities. Aware of the need to create and manage the host structures essential to the welfare, health, education, education and vocational training, some parents are associated. "
Type of Work: The volunteers will supervise and entertain the children giving them general knowledge notions. They will also organize many activities with the kids: laboratories for drawing, painting, sculpturing, singing and dancing; making sketches; doing sport, etc. The children will be lead to the discovery of a new way to learn. The volunteers can of course introduce the cultural aspects, which characterize their own countries such as songs, dances, games.
Accommodation: The accommodation will be close to the workcamp and will include a common room equipped with electricity. The preparation of the meals will be everybody’s task, as the volunteers will be sharing it.
Language: French is the official language in Togo, but in the southern part of the country the most spoken language is Éwé. French can be considered as the language relegated to a role essentially administrative. NB: The workcamp’s languages will be French and English.
Requirements: The ASTOVOT workcamps are open to everybody, no matter the volunteers’ nationality. The minimum required age is 18. No particular skill is required, being motivated about the activities and being able of maintaining a decent moral behaviour is enough.
Approximate Location: Kpalimé: Kpalime is a lovely city surrounded by hills, 120 Km from the capital Lomé in the south west of Togo. Known for its mild climate, its amazing landscapes and a large variety of tropical fruits, it is a moving city welcoming different peoples from all over the country and many tourists during summertime.
Notes: N.B. It would be nice if the volunteers could bring A4 papers, coloured pencils, exercise books, markers, kids games, some educational material for the kinder garden and everything else you think is necessary for the project’s good realization. At the end of the workcamp the volunteers will hold a public presentation in the village square in order to give a summary of the realized activities.
