Bear the Peace 2
Description: Velebit Association Kuterevo aims at preservation of natural and cultural heritage in the village and region around. For 15 years, the organization is running Refuge for bears and people. The Refuge provides opportunity for learning about and from bears and nature. The Bear Refuge, whenever it hosts volunteers, has very simple living conditions, and we try to make as little impact on the environment as possible. You will be finding out a lot about bears, about the history of the area, as one of the biggest activities will be camping in a village nearby, which has, in the past been a border between the Serbian people and Croatian people. This was a border between nations, religions, but even during the wars, they have managed to live in peace with each other.
Type of Work: The main focus will be a mural that will be on the road to Kuterevo, that is between two villages of different religions, with a powerful message of unity, living together despite our differences. Volunteers will also make various other art pieces, and help with other work in the refuge, which might include light physical labour. It may include working with hay, cutting grass, branches, feeding the bears, some light construction work with fixing fences, wooden constructions, benches etc.
Study Theme: Sustainable lifestyle, history of the conflicts in the area, learning how to live in harmony with nature and others
Accommodation: Wooden house with common sleeping room. Outdoor shower powered by solar energy (not very hot water). Composting toilets. Good sleeping bag necessary. Mattresses provided. Volunteers will cook for themselves, vegan food with vegetarian option. For 2-3 days, the camp will be in the village nearby to do some work there, so you need to bring a tent and sleeping bag.
Requirements: Be ready to live in very simple conditions, in wooden house and tents. Some artistic/creative skills are very welcome.
