Zentrum für Begegnung Doro (Chironico TI)
Description: The “Zentrum für Begegnung in Doro” resulted from the collective “Popolo Doro”. Originally started by 10 Swiss-German Youngsters in 1976, the initiative wanted to try out new forms of living together and to create an alternative community. While one part of the collective concentrated on agriculture, another part built and renovated houses in order to create a place, where seminars could be held, holidays could be spent and nature enjoyed. Doro is a good place to gain some distance from your own life situation and the civilized daily routine. SCI volunteers participated at the early stage of the project and will continue to be a part of this experience this summer. Further information in German about the project (-partner) you can find at: www.doro-tessin.com
Type of Work: Building a natural path (including planting trees next to it) between the houses of the hamlet. Possibly help with repairing the fence around the protected forest that burned in a fire recently. Various tasks working on a group house such as expanding a room (dismantling and building natural stone walls, building wooden walls, applying mortar etc.) and making a foundation to support the pillars of the house. There are also some small additional tasks such as cooking and wood chopping.
Study Theme: There will be a lecture in two parts on the subject of war and peace. The project partner will talk about the theories of Samuel A. Huntington’s book "The Clash of Civilizations", the book of Steven Pinker "The better angels of our nature" and Michael Wolffsohn’s book “Towards peace in the world”. After each part you will have the possibility to join the discussion about how we could reduce violence in our societies. We’ll also visit samples of local art and architecture.
Accommodation: There will be simple shared accommodation for the group. Volunteers will cook for themselves. Communication conditions are limited. There is some electricity in Doro to charge your mobile phones and for light. There are three or four sleeping rooms with beds, blankets and pillows, but still we recommend that you bring your own sleeping bag.
Language: The required camp language is English. The local language is Italian. Camp coordinator and project partner speak German too.
Approximate Location: Chironico is a small village located in the district of Leventina in the Swiss Italian-speaking canton of Ticino.
