Organic berry & fruit farm Brachland (Bubikon ZH)
Description: Biofarm Brachland is a completely organic fruit-berry-vegetable farm in the Zürich Oberland. They grow apples, pears and plums plus cherries, raspberries, blackberries, black currants, red currants, and blueberries. They also have a large vegetable garden, raise some pigs and culture mushrooms. The aim is to produce healthy food in a sustainable manner and in harmony with the environment. Their project this summer is to build water systems and a dry stone wall to improve the local microclimate and expand the farm's biodiversity. When the project is complete, ponds for ducks, fish and algae breeding will be created, and there will be a sustainable water supply for the trees and gardens as well as for the daily needs of people living on the farm.
Type of Work: You will work on the construction of a dry stone wall as well as on a ritual sweat room in a dry-stone construction. You will also work on different tasks on the water system, and help care for the fruits, berries and vegetables grown on the farm. Other tasks include preparing the wood construction of a community building, and renewing the 30 "insect hotels". If it rains, you can prepare the "furniture" for the "insect hotels", and tend to the berries that are covered by a roof. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to cook on an open fire and prepare tasty, healthy meals using produce grown on the farm; we have an extensive collection of "Bauernspezialitäten" recipes to draw on.
Study Theme: In addition to learning basic construction methods, volunteers will learn about the theory and practice of organic farming: keeping plants healthy and free of pests / fungus / disease without chemicals; caring for the soils; Bio Bud and Demeter standards for bio-dynamic production; how to operate a small farm in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. On the first two mornings we will walk the farm and describe the theory and science behind our approach. We will expand on these themes over the rest of the camp while caring out different tasks around the farm.
Accommodation: Will be in teepees, so volunteers need to bring a camping mattress and warm sleeping bag. There is a compost-toilet and an open-air, fire-heated bathtub volunteers can use. We can also build an outdoor shower. Limited access to a washing machine. Volunteers can access the w-lan of the farm. Meals will be prepared by volunteers themselves over an open fire mostly from the farm's organic products.
Language: The camp language is English for daily use. German, French and Italian are possible as well. The local language is Swiss German.
Requirements: Camping mattress and sleeping bag, work clothes, sturdy boots, hat, swim suit.
Notes: Please note that bathing possibilities are almost only outdoors and keep in mind it can be cold at night (even though it`s summer). It is possible to bring your own tent in case you would like to sleep there for more privacy instead of the teepee.
