International workcamp on non-formal youth skills development
Description: Siripi youth skills vocational training center is a community project for supporting school drop-outs due to early marriage. It is training youths who do not have chance for secondary education aged between 15-30 years old.
The courses are; 1. Catering and hotel management. 2. Carpentry and joinery. 3. Metal fabrication and welding. 4. Tailoring and garment cutting. 5. Brick laying and concrete practice. Additional to the above trade basic agriculture and entrepreneurial skills are compulsory. Currently the project has 94 girls and 66 boys are receiving non formal education support, most of them are school drop outs and early marriage youth.
Type of Work: Carpentry and joinery Wooden furniture; • Benches • Tailors stools • Doors/ windows • Office chairs • Book shelf with shutters • Roof a gabled house of 4mx6m • Make a 4”x 6”m beds.
Welding and metal fabrication • Fabrication of workshop benches, steel tables, single door, watering cans, windows, brick laying boxes etc.
Brick laying and concrete practice. • Prepare site • Setting out a house • Digging a foundation • Building foundation Tailoring and garment cutting. • Garment cutting • Making dresses for kids • Making dresses for women and m • Maintaining sewing machines
Study Theme: • Visit to R.Enyau and R.Nile base. • Home visit to refugee camps • Visit youth center at Ediofe • Stay in community trading center
Accommodation: • Accommodation will be in dorms at the training center nearby the workplace. • Participants will be required to carry own sleeping bags. • The accommodation has a simple bathroom without shower. • The accommodation and work place have latrines as toilets. • The accommodation and working place don’t have electricity
Language: The people found in West Nile region are multi tribal with the majority population being Lugbara, and the majority language spoken is Lugbara with also a big percentage of people speaking English well.
Requirements: Participants shall be required to bring, sun cream, mosquito repellent, working gloves, boots/shoes, light working clothes during working hours, warm clothes at night, as it may turn out to be cold, torch or flash light, personal effects, and materials for the cultural presentations about your country. Above all, do not forget a happy and positive attitude
Approximate Location: The workcampers shall stay at Siripi youth skills vocational training center in Siripi village, Odupi sub-county / Arua district
Notes: • The fee does not cover airport drop off after the project. Volunteers that intend to have the drop off service consult with UPA to identify the service provider. This service will cost an extra 25-28 Euros. • To allow the best preparations, participants are advised to arrive a day before commencement of the work camp applied for. • Meals are prepared by the work campers on charcoal stoves or open fire. In case you need to have a special meal/diet, you have to buy it yourself. • Shorts, dresses and skirts should reach knee length for cultural consideration. • Smoking in public is illegal while engagement in drug/harsh carries a life prison sentence
