Foster the city
Description: The workcamp is held in the city of Pilsen in cooperation with the local NGO "Foster the City". It deals with contemporary state of the public space and its affordable enhancement. Local people have an opportunity to demonstrate their ideas – to show what they feel wrong, what they miss, what they would like to participate in. The most successful projects, to which workcamps have so far contributed, include restoring the former Municipal River Bath, reviving the “Forgotten garden”, transformation of Springs at Roudná, etc. The aim of the workcamp this year is to renovate an abandoned park that is to be open for public or to continue working in the area of Municipal Bath (the final decision will be taken depending on the outcomes of the public consultations).
Type of Work: The work will be manual and outdoor, physically demanding. The main work activities should happen in the “Papirensky park” that is now in a bad state and the NGO Foster the city is working towards making it publicly accessible once again. The tasks in the park can include collecting garbage, cutting branches, cleaning and consolidating paths, producing outdoor furniture (benches, bins) or creating a staircase. Another alternative is to help with the long-term project of the Municipal River Bath revival – tasks can include creating a mobile shelter for boats, material and firewood, maintaining the banks of the river, renovating a stage for outdoor culture events. We are going to celebrate the effort - by throwing a concert or a neighbours’ party.Photos from 2015 are on http://on.fb.me/1OJepKM
Study Theme: Environmental excursion or a workshop together with some local Pilsen NGOs are possible. You will also help with the organization of an evening or afternoon event for the public at the work site and you can be actively involved in the program (these events are usually on weekends so please be ready to help a couple of hours, too – it will be great experience and fun).
Accommodation: Scout clubhouse (http://93delfini.skauting.cz/klubovna). The conditions are basic. There’s a kitchen, hot and cold water, 3 toilets but only 1 shower for 10 people (you’ll have to be fast :) Bring a warm sleeping bag, nights can be cold – you’ll sleep on the floor on mattresses. Warm lunches (vegetarian meals possible) will be provided at the worksite. You’ll prepare your own breakfast and dinner.
Requirements: Short motivation letter is required. We look for people who believe in improving the city by their own hands, who find fun and pleasure in doing so and who can also spice it up: if you cook, sing or can amuse others, it will be useful for the evenings…The work is hard but the results are also visible. We certainly do not want any moaners! :)
Approximate Location: City of Pilsen (www.pilsen.eu) is the capital of West Bohemia. With 170 000 inhabitants and 15 000 university students it is a significant cultural, business and industrial centre, internationally famous mostly due to the products of Pilsner Urquell and Skoda factory.
Notes: Leisure time: See some interesting Pilsen sights – Pilsen Brewery, medieval city centre, historical underground, Techmania Science Centre and do other activities such as visiting festivals, cinemas, sports facilities, restaurants, typical local pubs, cafés, tearooms and clubs, galleries, museums and ZOO, woods and lakes around the city.
