Theatre of the Oppressed-Théâtre de l'Opprimé
Description: The theater of the Oppressed was created in Brazil, by Augusto Boal. It aims at making social injustices public and encourages people to fight against them. SCI Belgium, in partnership with SCI France and SCI Catalonia, organizes a volunteering project around this technique, bringing together volunteers from France, Catalonia and asylum seekers who are living in Belgium. This year the theme of the project will be “Access to social rights” and the project will be supervised by the Theater Company “Ebullition” (https://www.ebullitiontheatre.org ).
Type of Work: The project will be a 10-days workshop which will bring together 19 volunteers, for 1/3 Catalan, 1/3 French and 1/3 of asylum seekers from different countries and residing in Belgium. Together, they will create several scenes on the theme of “Social rights”. These scenes will be based on the life experiences of the participants and will end with theater action performance: the scenes will be played, and then the spectators will be invited to react to the injustices represented and to make proposals for action to counter them.
Study Theme: The theme of the project will address issues of social rights and inequalities.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a House in the countryside in Vergnies. The last two days of the project the volunteers will be accommodated in Brussels for the performance.
Language: Knowledge in French is required, in order to express yourself during the theater workshops and play in French during the performance.
