Pulkkila Community and Local Heritage
Description: Pulkkila is a small village in Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland. Pulkkila’s local heritage association (Pulkkilan seura ry) organises local events, as well as maintains the local museum and the old Turula building dating back to the 19th century. During the camp, Pulkkila’s local heritage association wants to encourage also the local youth to participate in the work, and to become more active in the local community. The area provides wonderful opportunities to enjoy the local nature and different sports, as well as to experience one of the biggest celebrations of the Finnish summer – the Midsummer festival. Since the accommodation, the sauna and the working site are in separate buildings, about 1-3 km from each other, bicycles will be provided for the volunteers to use throughout the camp.
Type of Work: Clearing the surroundings of the local museum, such as cutting the grass and building a wooden fence. There is also a possibility to help cleaning and organising the museum and assisting in the organisation of a small local village festival. The local people, and especially the youth, will be invited to work with the volunteers, but of course the volunteers can also be active and arrange activities with the locals, such as sports, theme evenings, etc.
Study Theme: Local history and heritage, community life in a small Finnish village.
Accommodation: The volunteers will sleep in a shared room, having mattresses on the floor. Pulkkila’s local heritage association will provide mattresses, pillows, and blankets, but please bring your own sleeping bag or bedlinen with you. There will be a kitchen, toilets, and shower facilities available in the house. And of course, the volunteers will have the opportunity to go to the Finnish sauna!
Requirements: A positive attitude and being prepared to do some physical outdoor work. The Finnish summer weather is always a great mystery, varying from +25 degrees and sunshine, to +10 degrees and rain – so please bring your sense of humour with you!
Approximate Location: Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland. About 90 km from the city of Oulu.
