Youth Together: The Workcamp You Don't Want to Miss
Description: This is a very special workcamp because it was entirely planned by the community's youngsters. So what is the community we are talking about? This is a social housing neighborhood in Estoril, a beach town near Lisboa, the capital of Portugal. Here live mainly immigrant families from Guine Bissau and Cabo Verde, two African countries. International volunteers, together with the local youngsters and their families, will build and renew community spaces. Also, as a volunteer on this workcamp, you will have the chance to really get to know the community, the culture and also Estoril/Cascais and Lisbon. You will be overwhelmed with the beauty!
Type of Work: International volunteers will do a mix of manual and social work. You will be part of a renovation/building project, where you will work all together with the local community. The main goals are to renew the youth center, sports center and also build small community spaces where people can be together. The physical work is not too hard, but you need to be ready for it :) Apart from these tasks, you will also organize social activities for the community, especially the children.
Study Theme: You will learn about community development and youth empowerment. Also, we want to share with you how active citizenship can be a strong strategy for social inclusion! You will be working directly with 1st and 2nd generation immigrants and it will also be a great opportunity to learn from their culture, not just the Portuguese.
Accommodation: You will be sleeping on a modern school's gymnasium. There are bathrooms and showers (hot water too) available. It is right on the community, so you will not lose time walking between accommodation and project site. You can check some photos here: http://www.colegiosboanova.pt/colegio#instalacoes
IMPORTANT: Please bring your own sleeping bag and mat!
Language: The workcamp spoken language will be English, but, of course, knowing Portuguese or at least Spanish will be a big plus! Most of the community's members don't speak English, so it would help a lot to have the basic knowledge :)
Requirements: Because this is a workcamp organized by local youngsters, they want to share this experience together with other volunteers who are around their age - the maximum age is 30.
We ask all potential volunteers to have a short Skype talk so we can make sure we do have a group that fits the right motivation for this workcamp. We are looking for energetic, easygoing and proactive volunteers!
Approximate Location: This workcamp will be held in a social housing neighborhood called "Fim do Mundo", which translated to "The End of The World". It is located in S. João do Estoril, a beach town 20 minutes from Lisbon.
Notes: You will have time and activities to get to know the surroundings and portuguese culture. You will even get a city tour done by the youngsters on the center of Lisbon. Spoiler alert: your day will finish like this http://tinyurl.com/zb9k5sk and you will be part of a tradional festival where all the streets look like this http://tinyurl.com/hjmyedp :)
