Wikipedia for peace (Berlin)
Description: The online encyclopedia Wikipedia was started in 2001 and is today one of the most popular websites worldwide, being used by internet users all over the world for its open content created by volunteer writers. Over 38 million articles in over 250 languages exist already. This camp is the fourth of its kind after three workcamps took place in Austria in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The project is cooperation between Wikimedia Germany, a local chapter of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, and SCI Germany. Getting to know Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects and to create quality content about the topic of persecution and refuge available are the aims of this workcamp.
Type of Work: Doing research for Wikipedia articles, writing/translating new articles and improving existing articles in your native language. The focus will be on writing and improving biographies concerning the topic of persecution and refuge around the world, e.g. refugees who had to claim asylum and became accomplished parts of society with a positive influence on the country that granted them refuge. Other topics could be the reasons for persecution and why people have to seek refuge. Another task: taking pictures for Wikimedia Commons on cultural monuments/ memorials, sharing your new knowledge with the German Wikipedia community and maybe it will be possible to give a workshop to our host community- the Mennonites. You are very welcome to bring material and your own ideas!
Study Theme: There will be a big emphasis on studying in this workcamp and no physical work! Writing good Wikipedia articles, taking pictures for Wikimedia projects, learning about the principles behind Wikimedia projects as well as free licenses/open content philosophy in general, persecution and refuge and their connection to peace - through your own research, through exchange with other participants and through external inputs.
Accommodation: Shared rooms with beds and good sanitary facilities in a parish hall of the Mennonites with a nice garden in Berlin-Lichterfelde. Cleaning and cooking will be shared.
Language: English is camp-language, but you can write Wikipedia articles in any language you want, definitely it would be nice to write in your native language.
Requirements: Interest in the topics of the camp (persecution and refuge, peace issues and web culture), in writing and research. An own biographical background connected with the topic of persecution and refuge would be ideal. Knowledge on Wikipedia is not necessary - the camp coordinators and the (international) Wikipedia community will support the learning process.
Approximate Location: The camp will take place in Berlin (Lichterfelde-Ost) in a villa colony in south- west of Berlin. The accommodation will be the parish hall of the Mennonite parish in Berlin, which also serves as a peace center. The location is near to forests and lakes but still inside of Berlin so that the center can be reached quickly.
