Description: Project takes place in Novodevichy Convent, which is situated in Saint-Petersburg.
Type of Work: Volunteers will participate in the reconstruction of a monastery school for disadvantage children; also they will help with everyday works of the Convent, such as: cutting and watering the grass, feed the chicken in a henhouse, cleaning the territory of the Convent, taking care of plants in a greenhouse, helping nuns in a convent canteen. Be ready to paint, clean and work physically (if you can).
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in a piligrim’s house on the territory of the Convent. There will be two separate rooms with beds for men and women. Separate toilets and showers, towels, sleeping sheets will also be provided. Convent canteen provides ordinary food. Breakfast and lunch will be served in the canteen and dinner will be brought in your rooms by the person on duty.
Requirements: Volunteers should be tolerant to Orthodox religion, to follow dress code – for girls it is long skits, which should cover their knees, their heads should be covered by headscarf or something like this. Boys shouldn’t wear T-shirts and shorts in the monastery – more details about dress code you will find in the infosheet.
Approximate Location: The monastery is situated in the center of St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is famous for being a “cultural capital” of Russia.
Notes: Participants will be able to see the inner life of the Orthodox monastery. If volunteers would like to ask questions about Orthodox religion, they will be able to have a conversation with one of the nuns.
