EMMA center – ‘Utrecht’
Description: The EMMA Centre is a facility focused on goals which support world, peace and environment. The work of the EMMA Centre is based around article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” The EMMA Centre focusses on working towards the ideal of mankind taking care of life on earth as one big family without harming the interests of future generations and other life forms.
The EMMA Centre is situated close and on walking & biking distance from the swinging, historic and academic city centre of Utrecht.
Type of Work: This project will take place in cooperation with the housekeeper of the Emma Centre. Volunteers will work on the maintenance of the buildings, lawn and gardens, painting indoor and outdoor and maintenance of the facility indoor and outdoor.
Study Theme: During the 2017 international volunteering projects SIW aims to encourage a discussion focussing on climate and sustainability between the participants and the local community. Participants can choose one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 (source: 2030 Agenda UN) that is most relevant to their project. After a group discussion participants are invited to find a creative way, such as a play/performance, song, poetry or art out of recycling materials, to promote the targets that are part of the chosen SDG and how people can contribute to reaching them.
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in basic accommodation at the Emma Center grounds. Participants need to bring their own airbed/mat and sleeping bags.
Requirements: • Old/working clothes • Airbed/mat and sleeping bag • Rubber boots • High top sneakers • Rain is spread out over the year, so bring warm clothes
