Mankila Community and Crafts
Description: The village of Mankila is a small traditional village in Northern Ostrobothnia, Western Finland. In Mankila you can enjoy the typical Finnish country landscape. During the camp, the volunteers will work together with the villagers. They will get to experience an authentic rural lifestyle in a small Finnish agricultural community. The volunteers will stay in the village community house, and will have the opportunity to go to the sauna and swim. At the village house, they can play darts, floorball and board games. They will also have access to the internet. The camp host is willing to organize a daytrip to the nearby city of Oulu.
Type of Work: The volunteers will take part in a building project related to the recreational areas in Mankila. Mankila lake is suffering from eutrophication, and the volunteers will reduce its biomass by collecting reeds. The reeds will then be used for crafts.
Study Theme: The volunteers will learn to collect, store and dry reeds, and to make a useful object out of them. This could be anything from a hat to a small basket.
Accommodation: The volunteers will sleep in a shared space in the village house, with separate sleeping areas for men and women. There is a well-equipped kitchen, running water and an indoor toilet. A showering possibility will be arranged each day. Mattresses and pillows will be provided, but sleeping bags should be brought. The volunteers will make their own breakfast and dinner, lunch will be delivered.
