Protecting a medieval abbey from wildfire - (Sacra di San Michele - Piemonte)
Description: Principi Pellegrini / diVangAzioni aims at fostering civil society to reconsider its relationship with natural environment. It organises and promotes educational paths aimed at enhancing awareness of the need of a sustainable interaction between human beings and ecosystem. The guiding principle of its activity is the role which local communities and farms can play as custodians of the landscape, and its team is passionate about low-impact agriculture techniques.
Type of Work: During the workcamp we'd like to do some maintenance work in the woods surrounding the "Sacra di San Michele", mainly in order to prevent wildfire. Sacra di San Michele is a famous medieval abbey which was recently candidate to be part of UNESCO World Heritage List. Some of our activities will be carried out along with local young people and a group of boy-scouts.
Study Theme: Manual work will be flanked by explanations and will be discussed in depth. We envisage to deal everyday with a different aspect of ecosystem services provided by woodland. A particular focus will be dedicated to mycorrhiza (the symbiotic relationship between mushrooms and trees) and its beneficial effect on the soil. During the workcamp volunteers will be given a free day so they have the opportunity to visit the nearby city of Turin and/or other tourist attractions of the area, such as Avigliana lakes, Monte Musinè or Venaria royal castle and estate.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in three-bed rooms, with common wc and shower. Camping is possible just outside the farm. There is also a solar outdoor shower.
Language: English is required, as it'll be the language of the workcamp.
Requirements: Volunteers must me motivated and prepared to do a lot of manual, outdoor work.
Approximate Location: The camp is located along the "Via dei Pricipi" (a trekking route also called "Pilgrims' path", "Via dei Pellegrini") that goes from Borgata Mortera to Sacra di San Michele. The nearest towns are Avigliana (Station FS to Torino) 30 minutes by car and Giaveno (Bus to Torino) 10 minutes by car. Torino is just 30 minutes by train from Avigliana.
Notes: Strong shoes or o real safety shoes to avoid accidents are required, and working clothes. We would appreciate musical instruments, local recipes from volunteers and photos from places of origin.
