Building paths together with differently abled persons (Frassinetto, Piemonte)
Description: “Città del Sole scs” in an “A type” social co-operative which, since 1986, cares people with mental disabilities and troubled young teenagers, leading them through a customized social rehabilitation path. This year the workcamp will be held in Frassinetto, a small municipality on the edge of Gran Paradiso National Park: a pleasant mountain spot with grazing cattle, very appreciated by hikers. A local common housing in there hosts a maximum of ten people with different ability degrees. We’d like SCI volunteers to help us in creating socialisation opportunities for our hosts as well as taking part in footpaths maintenance and waymarking works along with Frassinetto municipality forestry workers.
Type of Work: Cleaning of hiking footpaths and improvement of their waymarks, along with forestry workers of the municipality. An important goal of this activity is to involve community hosts, which will also be present during the working hours.
Study Theme: A specific training about disabilities will be provided to SCI volunteers, with a special focus on autism disorders. Some of the problems of community hosts will also be discussed. Other subjects of the study part will be use of donkeys for therapeutic purposes and everyday planning of our activities.
Accommodation: SCI volunteers will be accommodated in a wide house provided by Frassinetto municipality. They must be equipped with mat and sleeping bag. Special needs should be communicated in advance. Toilet paper, washing powder, food and cutlery will be provided by Città del Sole.
Language: English and Italian will be the languages of the workcamp. A basic knowledge of Italian language is required in order to communicate with co-operative hosts, which is one of the main goals of Città del Sole cooperation with SCI.
Requirements: Some craftsmanship is advisable, as well as a good adaptability and the right mood to socialise and play together.
Approximate Location: Turin (Airport of Caselle and railway station of Porta Susa)
Notes: Volunteers must be equipped with working cloths, heavy boots, personal care products, sunscreen and mosquitoes repellent. All the costs of the camp will be sustained by Città del Sole except social events and individual and/or group trips expenses. Food will be mainly based on “Mediterranean diet”, volunteers with special needs are invited to contact Città del Sole as soon as possible via e-mail and/or phoning.
