Hajdúhadház - Creating Connections
Description: The basic aim of the camp is dual: firstly, to take part in smaller renovation and outdoor cleaning works around community buildings of the town. In this way, volunteers will be able to have an insight to rural life in a city with 13 000 inhabitants in Eastern Hungary. The interaction with volunteers from abroad brings encouragement to the local community and to the whole town. More importantly, the task is to come together in the afternoons with local Roma children and youth to play together, who are often from deprived background. The camp will allow us to participate in arts, sports and creative workshops together with the local kids for whom international friendships and non-formal education is a new area.
Type of Work: Smaller renovation works on garden buildings, arrangements for the courtyard for football; all tools are provided. Afternoons are about to work with the local kids - play, do sports and have workshops together. We are also planning to make a mural (huge painting on the wall) creating together with the kids.
Study Theme: Before meeting with the local kids there will be a study part about SCI, the local organization, and the community work going on in the town, as well as a workshop about the local people that volunteers will work with, social system in Hungary, issues that children and youth are facing and the effect of non-formal education. During the week, there will be several learning opportunities about Roma culture including dance, food, arts and crafts. Moreover, the town has a strong local agricultural side that we are going to explore. During the weekend, we will visit the nearby town of Debrecen.
Accommodation: There is a new and modern guesthouse in the town that is going to be the home for the volunteers during the camp. The house is well-equipped with a spacious community room ideal for big groups to eat and spend time together. The rooms are on the second floor; there are 4-6 beds in one room, several rooms are available. There are more bathrooms also.
Requirements: It is important that participants send motivation letter with their personal motivation, interests and possible contributions. With the help of the volunteers, we are going to create a positive, supportive and create atmosphere for the local kids involved. Feel free to include proposals about how you would like to contribute to the afternoon sessions with the kids!
Notes: Please write us a separate MOTIVATION LETTER to explain us why you find it attractive to participate in this particular camp and how you could support the success of the camp, and contribute with your ideas to the programme!
The local school kitchen is providing the lunch and dinners during weekdays, while we are going to cook together in the weekend. There is also equipment for outside cooking. A big supermarket is just next door.
Bring your energy and positivity, you will get a great experience in return!
