Kecskemét – Teaching and Renovation with children
Description: SOS Children’s Villages are a global charity, politically and religiously independent, working to prevent family breakdown and protect and care for children who have lost parental care. SOS works to ensure that the rights of all children, in every society, are respected and fulfilled. The children are growing up in family houses where their own brothers and sisters can stay together. Currently, the organisation is active in 134 countries. In Hungary it provides loving home for 400 children and youngsters. Útilapu - SCI Hungary started to cooperate with SOS Hungary 5 years ago. The camp will be organised in Kecskemét Children’s Village which is located in the suburbs of Kecskemét city. Volunteers will help in the demonstration of the importance of the physical work.
Type of Work: Physical work and organising programs with children. The primarily task of the volunteers is cleaning up the environment (e.g.: playground, park, sports field) of the children’s village. In event of bad weather conditions cleaning up community buildings is also part of the work. For the working you will need proper clothing. Tools and gloves are provided by the project partner. As the other part of the work, volunteers plan and carry out daily free time activities (e.g.: teaching language, sports events, art workshop, games) for the little children. Volunteers might help in the renovation and cleaning up of a local nursery school. The volunteers are asked to prepare a presentation about their home country, their culture, national cuisine, games or dance for the international evenings.
Study Theme: There are be plenty of opportunities to learn about youth and social work with disadvantaged children and the child care system in Hungary. There will be a presentation organised on Service Civil International and the 90+ years of the movement as well as on Útilapu, the Hungarian branch of SCI. The campleaders will share knowledge on short, medium and long term voluntary opportunities, in and outside of Europe. And of course, volunteers will be learning about other cultures, each other and themselves in funny and unexpected ways.
Accommodation: Accommodation will be in stone houses in the Kecskemét Children's Village. Beds are provided, but you should bring your sleepingbag. Some days food is ordered, other days the ingredients are provided for the meals and volunteers cook together.
Please note, that the camp is organised in a child protection organisation with the participation of vulnerable youngsters, therefore the consumption of any drugs, alcohol or tobacco is strictly FORBIDDEN!
Language: Basic English is required but remember that the willing to communicate with each other will break down any language barrier.
Requirements: We recommend our camp to proactive, brave, cheerful and hard-working people who like children.
Please write us a separate MOTIVATION LETTER to explain us why you find attractive participating in this camp and how you could support the success of the camp and participate with your ideas to the programme!
Approximate Location: The city of Kecskemét is located in the middle of the country with a population of more than 110.000 people. The city has a beautiful downtown with several lovely old buildings. In the city cultural events, festivals and concerts are held frequently, especially for the youth during summertime. There are various opportunities for sport lovers such as recreation parks, swimming pool, spa and artificial lakes. Daily trips on free days to interesting spots outside of Kecskemét will be organised.
