Kataskinosi camp (Pateras mountain)
Description: The workcamp is organized in cooperation with Happy Children-Happy Youth Camps, a Non-profit Volunteers’ Organization with 86 years of action. The volunteers will help the Camp staff in hosting 140 very poor children from families with financial and social problems. This is the 17th year that the workcamp operates and more than 150 volunteers have participated in the past years.
The volunteers will learn how our organization provides social and educational support to the children. They will also learn things about Traditional Greek Shadow theater, handicrafts, Greek dance lessons and other creative activities (optional).
Type of Work: Preparing meals, kitchen cleaning (main tasks!). Cleaning, painting, garden work (mostly during the first 3 preparation days, before the children’s arrival). Optional and additional activities; organizing and assisting in the activities with the children. (e.g. sports activities, handicrafts, group activities, games, music)
Study Theme: The volunteers will get a close look in how a system that is supported only by volunteers can be organized from the side of management (kitchen, storage, cooking, technical support). They will get a basic training in the beggining on how a kitchen that supports 200 people works. The volunteers will learn how we provide social and educational support to the children. They can also learn about some Greek art (music, traditional shadow theatre, dances). We can also provide basic greek lessons (alphabet, basic words and expressions).
Accommodation: In tents provided by our organization (own tents not necessary),bring a sleeping bag. The volunteers will spend the entire period at the camp.
Language: English, Greek speakers are welcome.
Approximate Location: The camp is situated in the Pateras Mountain, near the city of Elefsina (about 40 km from Athens).
Notes: No drugs, no alcohol allowed. Transportation to Elefsina or Athens will be possible at free days. It is possible to visit nearby archaeological sites or resorts. Volunteers shouldn’t have health problems that prevent them to work in a kitchen. 18-35 years old volunteers are welcome. There is no access to internet (only through mobile network).
