Description: This workcamp is newly organized with the local NGO named "Group to create the rice fields where fireflies can live in". The leader got inspired by the nature farming on TV, so started rice farming and created the group in 2004. He now maintains 1.1 ha of the field without using any chemicals nor cultivating, but with keeping water even in winter, so various types of living including fireflies can co-exist and earth worms fertilize the land. 160 "students" including the rice farmers learn his farming and the group also sometimes organizes the open events to gather the mothers, children and other people widely to experience planting rice together.
Type of Work: Volunteers will help and join the organic farming without using any chemicals by planting the soya beans and weeding in the rice field. The workcamp aims to promote the ecological farming as well as to activate the hosting community through the exchange between the volunteers and local people.
Study Theme: Agricultural situation in each country
Accommodation: Big room (about 20 tatami size) of the training hall. Meals will be cooked by volunteers by turns. Sleeping bag is necessary.
Language: English (Japanese is also welcomed!)
Requirements: High motivation to work hard in the muddy fields. High interest in the organic/ nature farming as well as food and health issue
Approximate Location: Takayama village is 1 hour distance by car, north from Nagano city which is located in the north east of Nagano prefecture. The climate is colder than low land, so even in summer, it may be cool in the evening and morning.
Notes: Other activities: Exchange with the local people, possibly fireflies watching event with the consumers of his organic rice living in the cities, etc.
