World heritage: conservation of Rimac historical center
Description: The neighborhood of Rimac, at the time of colonial Lima, used to be the part of the town where the Spanish nobles had their luxurious residences. That changed with the time, and nowadays the hyped Miraflores and Barranco districts house the high and medium classes of Lima, while Rimac has been deserted. The ancient colonial and pre-colonial heritage has been for long neglected, but now the municipality, in collaboration with the Bolivarian Brigade of Volunteers, has decided to change the situation. For 2018, the Brigada, in partnership with other local organizations, presented a project of valorization and conservation of the historical center of Rimac to the World Heritage Volunteering Initiative in order to dynamize the process of rehabilitation of the district.
Type of Work: The volunteers, under the supervision of a technical leader, will clean, paint and furnish the last floor of the ancient backus factory, in order to allow the Rimac social center to use it for cultural and pedagogic activities. They will clean the Huaca la Florida archeological site, in order to open the ancient temple ruins to the public. They will also organize an activity to raise awareness on the importance of the site targeting the local population. Supported by the local organization "ocupa tu calle", the volunteer will organize street action in order to requalify the urban space. The participants will prepare and implement intervention in schools to sensitize local pupils to the importance of local heritage, its preservation and valorization.
