Mountains enchanted: the art of water springs in the Italian Alps (Cumiana)
Description: Vivere la Montagna is an organisation established in 2012 with the scope of promoting, developing and enhancing the territory in its cultural, touristic, economical, environmental, and social-life aspects in the local highlands. On the local Alps, there are a relevant number of small natural water springs which issue a very good quality water and they form a delicate and pleasant punctuation, dislocated in the highland territory. In order to be able to be appreciated, the springs require ordinary and extraordinary clearing of the area and maintenance.
Type of Work: Part of the main project that entwines, on different levels, cultural and touristic elements, is to bring back the springs to a decent level of useful pleasantness. This will be achieved by ordinary and extraordinary maintenance activities, both, on the springs themselves and on woodland tracks and pathways to reach them springs. Among the main activities involved, aside the clearing and refurbishing of the actual spring base areas, there are some small naturalistic engineering works to be done and some clearing of woodland areas, by means of removal of excess vegetation.
Study Theme: Water represents the most important worldwide concern on resources, and not only in the worst arid areas. We propose to emphasize the importance that our water springs had for human life in this Alpi Cozie's highlands. The research, that entails the collaboration of other entities and associations, has the target of re-discovering the names and toponomy, customs, traditions, facts and episodes related to the springs, to increase awareness about water, in whichever form it is found in nature, starting from the spring that, with its name, means the source of everything, including life.
Accommodation: Pitch places for tents, toilet and hot water showers within a closed camping area of Camping Verna (tents and other camping equipments are not provided, the participants should bring their own material). There is a free WiFi service on the camping site.
Language: The language of the workcamp is English, even though even Spanish and French are talked.
Requirements: Capability to work with manual activities and in conditions not always comfortable, in the middle of alpine woodland areas. Very useful would be any skills in naturalistic engineering techniques.
Approximate Location: The Camp is based in Cumiana (near Turin), within Camping Verna - Strada Verna 37, on the Alps at about 7 km from the main square of Cumiana. There is a unique meeting point the 21st of August at 4 p.m. (16:00) at the central square of Cumiana. Departure for all is Thursday August 30th.
Notes: The activities described are part of water spring project that Vivere la Montagna is implementing since its early days of constitution, and it's part of other projects managed by our association on other aspects and themes, as indicated in the statutory document. There are project for all the areas concerned, such as cultural, touristic, environmental and social-life elements. SCI participants will have the opportunity to learn about the association's activities and to be part of some social life moments. The Alpine rim of Alpi Cozie, where activities will take place, is a beautiful highland area, that has maintained his natural wild status and it is target of many tourists. It is therefore an enchanted place to spend some free time immersed in the quietness of wild nature during breaks.
