Mission: Wolf- Caring for Wolves and Wolf-Dogs (Colorado)
Description: Mission: Wolf (M:W) is a peaceful sanctuary for 32 captive wolves and wolf-dogs. The animals living there were all born in a cage. Most captive wolves do not survive to see their 1st birthday- they are often destroyed or neglected. M:W works with the wolves to educate people about the value of wild wolves and drawbacks of trying to keep a wild animal as a pet. It's a cooperative effort among people with a common mission. M:W values respect for animals and sustainable living. The goal is a healthy, open, empowering environment that promotes personal growth, and inspires individuals to become stewards of the earth. At its best, the experience is an integration between work and play, filled with joy, vitality, humor, sensitivity, and flexibility.
Type of Work: Care and maintenance of 30+ wolves, wolf dogs, and their facility. Expect physical work and to be outside. Schedule is 8 hours/day and 5 days/week. Volunteers set their own schedule. Animal care involves counting, preparing food for, feeding, and hauling water to wolves. Work on the facility includes organizing existing areas, re-claiming donated material, improving visitor access trails, handrails, seating areas, campsites, vehicle repair/maintenance, greenhouse work, and construction.
Study Theme: Wolves and wolf-dogs, sustainable living, community living, animal behavior.
Accommodation: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tent & sleeping bag. A small # of used tents & sleeping bags, & a tipi are available for volunteers who don't have their own. Shower & laundry 1x per week (b/c it's all solar powered). Toilet, CD player, internet, phones available on site. Volunteers expected to help prepare food for everyone on location. Requirements: A supplemental application and a motivation letter are required (see notes). Volunteers must arrive at the start of the camp at a predetermined location and commit for the full duration of the camp. There will only be ONE pick-up & drop-off. It's not possible to hitchike. Come prepared for weather & elevation. Drugs and alcohol are forbidden.
Approximate Location: In the mountains of southwestern Colorado, between Gardner and Westcliffe.
Notes: Please note that feeding wolves involves preparing raw meat. Contact with animals is limited and the majority of contact volunteers have with animals is hands off. Mostly, volunteers simply live around the wolves, caring for them in a hands-off manner. However, "Wolf Visits" occur occasionally with certain animals, under specific circumstances and some animals may initiate contact on their own. Also, there are usually weekly visits with ambassador animals (animals accustomed to people). Elevation is 9300 ft. Mountain weather is unpredictable (storms and strong wind).
