Call for support for community-based conservation initiatives of white and black rhinos: case study-Khama Rhino Sanctuary in North-central Botswana, Africa
Description: Khama Rhino Sanctuary is located around 25km north of Serowe and 320 km North West from Gaborone, capital city of the Republic of Botswana. It is defined by Kalahari desert sands and quite range of vegetation. Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a conservation park for the endangered white and black rhinos. It also hosts a wide range of animals including kudus, impalas, gemsboks, giraffes, and a variety of small animals and birds.
Type of Work: The volunteers will assist in the maintenance of the footpaths, park fence, fire breaks and trails and helping in day to day business maintenance of the park. The workcamp work will include volunteers getting involved in administration office of the park in their own chosen times and days. Volunteers will also be free to get involved in the financial management and marketing units of Khama Rhino Sanctuary. In addition, Khama Rhino Sanctuary offers volunteers opportunity to learn more about the hospitality as volunteers can be involved in the restaurant to learn and exchange menus with park chefs. Thus, the work at the park will not be declined to physical or manual work only but would involve volunteers sharing their professional skills or new learnings in finance, housekeeping, marketing.
Accommodation: Khama Rhino Sanctuary provides accommodation in camping sites. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own tents and mattresses. Camp sites are connected to good lighting, power sockets, hot showers and running water ablution blocks.
Language: ENGLISH is the medium of communication in work camp. Note: Workcamps are form of cultural exchange as such participants are encouraged to learn each other language Participants who are not good in English are also accepted to participate as BWA encourages non-discrimination.
Requirements: Volunteers are responsible for their own travel arrangements organizing their own transport and passports. It is usually advisable to check out travel prices before deciding on a particular placement. BWA is not a travel agency, but will help where possible. We communicate with other partner organizations and with the person who wish to come by either fax, telephone or e-mail with regular update.
