CH-SCI 7.2 Creative activities with Chinese youngsters (Hasliberg BE)
Description: The Ecole d'Humanité is located in an alpine village between Interlaken and Lucerne. Surrounded by the awe-inspiring peaks of the Bernese Oberland, our international village for living, learning, and growing is home to students and adults from some 20 different countries. In summer 2018, the Ecole for the first time offers a camp to children aged 12 to 16 from Shanghai. The purpose of the camp is to give children the opportunity to explore their own creativity – a feature many parents perceive neglected in Chinese schools. The activities of the camp are highly inspired by the afternoon course curriculum of the Ecole d’Humanité and will focus on community life, handicraft, arts, culture and sports. Team members of the camp will be mixed of very Ecole teachers, alumni and external people.
Type of Work: Volunteers may be working in one or several of the following fields: • Assisting a teacher in a course. • Facilitate activities for the evening program (fireplace, games, dancing, …) • Translate (English – Mandarin – English) • Support the kitchen team. • Transport of students and/or material in the school bus (9 seats). • Option for experienced volunteers to facilitate a course (ceramics, wood/metal workshop, theater, singing, sports).
Study Theme: A former school director or a very informed alumnus or alumna will talk about the rich history of our school. In the early 20th century, the founders of our school had to flee the Nazis and came to Switzerland. Students of different cultural background should live, learn and love together in order to increase intercultural understanding. Their educational ideas were radical at that time but the founders succeeded in organizing the necessary support. Much of the founding vision is still alive today and the school has remained a value-based community.
Accommodation: Volunteers will live in simple double rooms with a shared toilets and showers. Volunteers can use the washing machines. There will be WIFI for volunteers. Cell phone use will be limited (not during lunch and program time for ex.) based on the school philosophy and culture. Food will be provided to the whole camp community by an external caterer.
Language: Spoken languages will be German, Swiss German & Mandarine.
Requirements: Volunteers who would like to be in charge of a course need to be experienced teachers.
Notes: This is a pilot project which includes new partnerships. There is a small chance that the summercamp may not take place in case of an insufficient number of participants from China. Therefore, we suggest volunteers not to book their flights yet. We expect to have a better overview about the number of participants by the end of June. In case of the cancellation of the project with the Chinese students, volunteers may participate in the Workcamp with different set of tasks, i.e. support of our maintenance team in renovating rooms and furniture and/or garden work. No previous experience in artisanry is needed for this kind of work but if you do have it, even better.
