Organic Farming for Next Generation
Description: Organic farming provides people healthy and a safe food choice. Sustainable agriculture does not use harmful pesticides that decrease the nutrition value of food and affect the environment in many ways. However, not all of us are familiar with organic farming, they still opt for vegetables that are grown with the use of harmful pesticides. We’re creating awareness through young generation about sustainable agriculture and protect people from artificial food by introducing organic farming, encourage and teach them how to plant organic vegetables in their home garden to practice eco-friendly activities at home, provide a better understanding of sustainable agriculture. This would be also an opportunity for an Intercultural understanding.
Type of Work: The main task for volunteers will be garden work and farming activities with school children age between 12- 14, parents, teachers in a rural school and in the Blue Rose premises with SCI local youth volunteers. Most of the work involves being outdoor and volunteers must have interest in organic farming / garden work with children and youth. Other task will be cleaning the planting area, weeding with hands and tools. Apart from this agricultural field visit with children and engage with locals to learn about local village culture for the purpose of multicultural learning and exchange. Volunteers will get an opportunity to experience in the countryside discover local history and traditions especially seasonal Parade (Kandiyan Perahara).
Study Theme: Organic agriculture / Intercultural understanding Together with local communities, participants will learn everything about organic agriculture, the seasonal crops during summer, and the background of people living the country side. Besides, volunteers will learn about different cultures and community groups in the village.
Accommodation: During the first two and final few days of the project, volunteers will stay in SCI Sri Lanka with basic living condition, shared rooms and bathrooms. There is a washing machine to clean your clothes and responsible for keeping the place clean. During the school visit, volunteers will stay 3 days in a school in the rural area. The facilities during these stay will be very basic, volunteers will sleep together in large class room floor. Internet access is limited. Participants should bring their own sleeping bags, if necessary pillows to use during their stay at school.
Language: Tamil, Sinhala and English will be spoken among the local volunteers and the community. More or less everyone will speak English.
Requirements: We expect the volunteers interested in farming, to work with the team they’ll be assigned to and willing to do sometimes heavy work on the field.
Approximate Location: The workcamp will happen in a village located in the Kandy, Central part of Sri Lanka.
Notes: Volunteers are requested to bear their own health and travel insurance. Please keep it in your mind that all personal expenses and free day expenses are excluded. It is necessary to bring sun protection, light clothing, a hat, as well as Mosquito Repellent. Toiletries, pullovers, Torch, Umbrella will be needed and music instruments, any games to play with children and other volunteers.
