Peace and Youth Environment Workcamp
Description: This Youth Development training center locates at Kurunegala which is in the northern part of Sri Lanka was maintained by Sri Lankan Government and the training courses are conducted for a less amount targeting lower-income families in the village. But the ignorance and insufficient government funding have affected the maintenance of the training center and it creates a greater threat to poor student’s future in the area. Our main aim is to help them to develop the center and the premises for the future needs with the help of the local community and the youth in the village. This will be a good opportunity for the young people to interact with a different community and work together, most of all this would be a great help for the development of youth.
Type of Work: The main task for volunteers will be gardening and cleaning activities with local youth age between 13- 25 and SCI local volunteers. Most of the work involves being outdoor and volunteers must have interest in gardening and cleaning, to work with the team. Other tasks will be cleaning the area, weeding with hands and tools and painting the wall of the training center, sometimes there will be heavy work on the field. In the meantime, local and international participants will exchange their knowledge, skills, and experience about their culture and education.
Study Theme: Apart from this workcamp, participants together with local youth will visit few places around the village and engage with different local communities to learn about different communities, village culture for the purpose of multicultural learning and exchange and will get an opportunity to experience in the countryside discover local history and different traditions
Accommodation: Participants will stay in a house with a local family, Mawathagama and sleeping spaces are separated for males and females. You will be provided with basic sleeping material and participants will sleep on the floor. Please bring your own sleeping bag, pillowcase, sheet and mosquito net. Accommodation location is near the campsite, which can accommodate about 25 people. Participants are responsible to keep the place clean, should do their own washing (NO washing Machine) and Asian style toilets and bathrooms are available at the campsite.
Language: Tamil, Sinhala, and English will be spoken among the local volunteers and the community. More or less everyone will speak English.
Requirements: We expect the volunteers interested in community work, to work with the team they’ll be assigned to and willing to do sometimes heavy work on the field.
Approximate Location: North Western part of Sri Lanka – Kurunagala
Notes: Volunteers are requested to bear their own health and travel insurance. Please keep it in your mind that all personal expenses and free day expenses are excluded. It is necessary to bring sun protection, light clothing, a hat, as well as Mosquito Repellent. Toiletries, pullovers, Torch, Umbrella will be needed and music instruments, any games to play with children and other volunteers.
