Making Peace in Ukraine: the City of Hope
Description: This camp is dedicated to studying life in a big city from the perspective of a forced migrant. In 2014 Kharkiv has become a major hub for internally displaced people from the conflict zone in Donbass region. In 2015-2016 SVIT-Ukraine helped local initiatives AK Center and Station Kharkiv to provide first help to IDPs. Now four years later many displaced people decided to make Kharkiv their new home. We would like to research how the process of adaptation has been for them. Together we will try to understand the problems as well as the impact of local media on the image of internally displaced people.
Type of Work: We shall work 4-6 hours a day conducting different types of research of the city and what it offers to newcomers. We will analyse news, conduct questionnaires and write stories in English and native languages of volunteers. You might need to translate short texts into your native language. You don’t have to be a media-maker or have any special abilities to take part, but creativity and curiosity is the key for this project. We encourage you to take any kind of camera, art supply or a laptop.
Study Theme: Volunteers will gain basic skills of conducting interviews and fact-checking. They will learn how to analyse news and even create their own stories. In theoretical part we will pay special attention to cultural adaptation of newcomers in the city and learn about new practices of adapting to new environment ourselves while discovering culture and history of the region.
Accommodation: Volunteers will live in a shared apartment, please bring your sleeping bags. Showers and kitchen are available. We will cook together, so you might think of some traditional recipes of your country to try.
Language: English, local languages — Ukrainian, Russian.
Approximate Location: Kharkiv is the second largest city and the first capital of Ukraine. Though situated in the Eastern part of the country, Kharkiv is hundreds of kilometers away from the conflict zone. It has rich cultural and nightlife. If the weather is nice in free time we can also make short trips to small picturesque places in the region and enjoy beautiful local nature.
