Description: HIV/AIDS epidemic is continuing to grow despite initial optimism that prevention strategies implemented several years ago were beginning to have a positive impact. According to UNAIDS and WHO, stigma and discrimination, whether actual or feared, remain perhaps the most difficult obstacles to prevention of HIV. UVIKIUTA Youth Center is working with a number of different local Youth and women groups, faith based organizations and local authorities to increase awareness of how to prevent transmission and infection of HIV/AIDS amongst key groups and also to try and remove some of the stigma attached to people living with HIV and AIDS.
Type of Work: Based on the four components of the program (Orientation, Community services, cultural exchange, Development/global education) participants of this project will participate in mobilizing and conducting free HIV counseling and testing , field visits to HIV/AIDS service providers, Blood donation and blood donation events. This will be part of marking world HIV-AIDS days. Other activities will include awareness of how to prevent transmission and infection of HIV/AIDS, and issue around stigma attached to people living with HIV and AIDS. These will be conducted in a form of workshops, debates, arts and music, sports bonanza/Tournaments, etc.
Accommodation: Participants are expected to be hosted in local host families within the community. Depending on the availability of the families, in some cases Participants will be sharing accommodation in community residential house. Clean water and electricity will be available. In that case living rooms will be shared with 3-5 Participants and available full time kitchen staff to manage meals preparation.
Language: The official language of this project is English and Kiswahili. However you do not need to be fluent.
Requirements: No special or particular expertise/skills required; however a potential Participant for this project should be the one who is open minded and independent, interested in health issues, travel, asking questions and sharing views.
Approximate Location: The project is located in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, in Magole, Temeke region, Tanzania
Notes: €250 Non-refundable participation fee to be paid on arrival day. The participation fee covers the cost of airport pickups on arrival, local transport to the project (one way), orientation on arrival, food and accommodation during the program. The fee also contributes to the running cost of program activities before, during and after the program. However the participation fee does not cover the cost of medical/health services, cost of relevant Visas or permits, airport drop off on departure date, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses.
